A first-month list of where the money goes needs one entry that is not a cost at all, and that entry is margin. At FxPro the margin you need is your position size divided by your leverage: at 1:200 that is 0.5% of the position — about $540 for a one-lot EUR/USD trade, roughly $108,000 notional — and about $1,080 at 1:100. That money is held while the position lives and released when it closes; nothing is ever taken from the balance on its account. What it does decide is how large every real item on the list becomes, because spread, commission, overnight swap and any fill difference are all quoted per lot. FxPro's free margin, pip, profit/loss and swap calculators work this out for you before you place a trade, on the website and inside the platforms. Leverage and margin cut both ways — a smaller margin controls a larger position and a bigger potential loss.

Measured contract values for your calculations

Read live from FxPro’s MT5 Raw+ feed — the contract size, tick value, lot limits and average daily range behind any margin, pip-value, stop-size or profit calculation:

The entry on the list that is not a charge

Margin is the number that looks most like a cost and is not one. It is set aside while a position is open and released the moment it closes, so nothing is ever deducted for it — the only thing that moves is how much of the balance is available to trade with while the position lives. A first week that felt expensive because there was suddenly less to trade with was, under this heading, not charged anything whatsoever.

The four items that do take money are the spread built into your entry price, the commission on a raw-spread account, the overnight swap on positions that survive the rollover, and the gap between the clicked and the filled price. Margin sits alongside them on the list purely so that it can be crossed off it.

Size is the multiplier on everything else

Every real cost on the list is quoted per lot. Trade a tenth of the size and you pay a tenth of the spread cost and a tenth of the swap; above the smallest commission tier the commission scales the same way. That makes trade size the single input that sets the scale of a whole month, and it is the one input these calculators settle before the order exists.

The practical order is short: choose the size, read the margin it requires at your leverage, then price the charges that follow from it on our spreads and costs and swap rates pages. The measured contract sizes and tick values above are exactly the inputs those calculations need.

What the calculators cannot tell you

Two of the five first-month items are not calculable in advance: the difference between the price you clicked and the price you were filled at, and the effect of the hour the order landed. Both are measurable rather than quotable, which is why we publish our own readings for them on trading conditions and live spreads.

Everything else is arithmetic you can do before the first trade of the month, using the same numbers the platform itself will use.

What the margin is holding, and what it is not

LeverageMargin on a one-lot EUR/USD tradeShare of the position
1:200About $5400.5%
1:100About $1,0801%

Held while the position is open and released when it closes — nothing is deducted for it. The position itself is roughly $108,000 notional in both rows; only the collateral changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is required margin one of the costs of a first month?
No. Margin is collateral: it is set aside while the position is open and returned when it closes, and nothing is deducted for it. It belongs on the list only because it is the number beginners most often mistake for a charge.
When in a first month does margin usually cause confusion?
In the first week, when the amount available to trade with drops the moment a position opens and comes back when it closes. Nothing was charged: at 1:200 the position is simply holding 0.5% of its value aside — about $540 on a one-lot EUR/USD trade.
What does the FxPro margin calculator do?
It shows how much margin a position requires at your selected leverage, so you can size trades within your balance.
Which first-month costs change when I change trade size?
All the ones that cost money. Spread cost, the $3.50-per-side commission on a raw-spread account, the overnight swap and any fill difference are quoted per lot, so doubling the size doubles each of them. Settling the size first is what makes the rest of the list predictable.
What calculators does FxPro offer?
FxPro provides margin, pip, profit/loss and swap calculators to help you plan trade size and cost.
Does FxPro have a pip and swap calculator too?
Yes. Alongside the margin calculator, FxPro provides pip-value, profit/loss and swap calculators to plan a trade end to end.
How much leverage can I use when calculating margin?
Leverage at FxPro runs up to 1:200 depending on the instrument and account; the margin calculator uses your chosen leverage to show the required margin.
Is the FxPro margin calculator free?
Yes. FxPro's trading calculators are free to use inside the FxPro platforms.
